They scratch, perch, and eat food scraps like apple cores (diced) and carrot peels in addition to their "chick starter" feed. My husband thinks they look pretty ugly right now, with long skinny necks and mottled feathers growing in every which way. It's their "adolescent" phase:
However, we only had seven fertile duck eggs, and of those, the yolk is stuck to the shell in several of them; so we don't expect that our incubation experiment will be very successful. It is pretty cool to see the duck embryos moving around in the "good" eggs, though!
The girls had to say goodbye to the old, rotten willow tree that they have been playing on and around for the last few years:
They were sad, but are excited about their new "fort" in the trees behind the site we have chosen for our new chicken coop:
The duck house will sit on concrete blocks on an old concrete foundation that is to the left of the willow stump, and there will be a fenced yard for the chickens and ducks between the two structures.
Clear as mud? Hopefully I'll have some pictures of the finished poultry area by the time the rest of our chickens and ducks arrive at the end of April: a dozen Blue Swedish ducklings and fifteen Black Australorp chicks.
