another funny

Last night it was Stephen's turn.  Let's just say we did not have a good day and I was not happy with this little boy when we sat down for dinner, but it's hard to stay upset with him long because he's such a little clown.  Adam starts serving the kids their food and they all say "Arigato".  I remind Adam that Teresa learned about Japan at school (3 months ago) and that is "thank you" in Japanese.  We weren't sure how to say "You're Welcome" but the kids started saying other words in Japanese, Adam counted in Spanish, and then Stephen interrupts with a karate chop to the table and "CHA-KA", which he immediately explains: "That's 'chopping'.  In English".

funnies

After Stephen's shower the other night I told him to go get on his underwear and pajamas. When I went into his bedroom, he had on his pajama top and was playing. "Stephen! I thought I told you to put on your underwear." Without looking up he said, "It is." I replied, "Really? What color is it?" He looked down and said, "Skin color."

Things I never thought I'd say: (to Stephen) "Don't pee on the chickens!"
We had taken out fruit and vegetable scraps and they came running, as usual. He took the opportunity to do some target practice.

****************

Anthony checked out a book from the school library, Edwina, The Dinosaur Who Didn't Know She Was Extinct by Mo Willems. He was telling grandma about it: "I got the book about the dinosaur that stinks."

James Thurber

One of our Caldecott Award books is Many Moons by James Thurber, illustrated by Louis Slobodkin. I've been told that James Thurber has some other delightful children's books like The 13 Clocks, The Great Quillow (currently OOP) and The Wonderful O.

Margaret Perry over at Little Lamb Books recently provided a link to James Thurber's The Unicorn In the Garden from his book, Fables For Our Time. Have you read it? Go ahead - or, if you'd prefer, you can watch it here. I looked for more...and I found The Princess and the Tin Box. Hil.ar.i.ous!

I'm posting this here because I know you don't all read my book blog and [sometimes] you need a laugh at the end of a Monday.

high hopes

Anthony drew this picture for me (that's why he wrote 'Mom' on it) He was so excited when he told me, "Mom, I got to see the JANITOR today!" Really? Did everyone draw a picture of the janitor? "No. They want to be other things when they grow up." (here, I had to suppress a laugh and fortunately, he was looking at the picture he was coloring). So, you want to be a janitor when you grow up? "YES! I can work at the school and help at the school." He has always been a great helper around the house. Remember this?

So, in addition to mopping the kitchen floor, I think I'm going to add "take out the trash" and "scrub the toilets" to his chore list. It's career training!

According to Stephen:

"The world is good...but we don't eat it."

funny boys

On Sunday, Stephen did not want to get up an hour earlier than normal in the dark. (Do you blame him? I wish they'd get rid of daylight savings...) Adam tried talking him into it:

Adam: We have to get ready for church. Don't you want to see Jesus?
Stephen: NO.
Adam: You love Jesus. Don't you want to see Father V.?
Stephen: NO.
Adam: Jennie and Jesse will be there, too. Don't you want to see them?
Stephen: NO. And I don't want candy, either!

Read: Nothing you can bribe me with will work, dad. Just let me go back to sleep in my warm bed.

~~~~~
Anthony just got home from grandma's and all the kids were getting ready to go play outside. Stephen had the door open and I heard Anthony tell him to shut the door. Stephen didn't and I heard Anthony shout, "You're breaking one of God's Commandments!" Would that be the 11th: Thou shalt not leave the door open?
(Honestly, though, I was impressed that he could relate a "house rule" to the 4th Commandment: "Honor your father and your mother" and that breaking a rule was disobeying and that was breaking one of God's commandments - it just sounded so funny!)
funny funny anthony
We were doing a Starfall worksheet on the letter Rr and thinking of words that start with the /r/ sound. Anthony came up with "ruby" and I was so impressed!
I asked, "Do you know what a ruby is?"
He answered, "Yeah - it's a scooby like Scooby Doo."
Rooby rooby roo!
cute kid stuff
Teresa came up to me this morning saying, "Mom, I'm boring."
No you're not, sweetie.
"Yes, I am. There's nothing to do."
If you ask Stephen his name, he will reply, "I'm Stephen Vincent [Q] and Superman to the rescue!" (not just Superman, mind you, Superman to the rescue.)
If Stephen doesn't know the proper name for something, he'll call it an "[adjective/verb] thini-bellini" For example, the meat thermometer is the "beeping thini-bellini". The wine bottle opener is the "screwing thini-bellini". Sometimes we can figure it out. Other times I just don't know what the "green thini-bellini" is...
Catherine was recently hanging on to a box by the linen closet and flailing her legs, calling to Teresa, "Save me!" Apparently, she was in a river and the stairs were a waterfall that she was going to get sucked over if she let go.
None of our kids have quite got the language down when it comes to nursing mommies. I have to roll my eyes every time they ask about those "milk things" or "bras". Even funnier, though, Catherine asked Andrea last weekend why she wasn't "milking" Eliza.
Anthony says so many funny and unexpected things, but I have such a hard time remembering them. I need to carry around a piece of paper...some favorite phrases include: "the tippiest top!" And "arghhh..." when he is frustrated.
The final / most recent funny is from Stephen, again. He left a cup of water in the van overnight and finding it frozen, he complained, "I don't want it icy. I want it drinky!"
Jose
Stephen picked up the phrase, "NO WAY, JOSE!" and loves to use it.
Today he was in an agreeable mood and said, instead, "O.K., JOSE!"
not really sick...
Anthony asked for candy after supper and Adam said, "Sorry, buddy. Candy is no good for sick kids." Anthony's response? Classic: "I'm not really sick. I was just pretending."
the difference between boys and girls
(overheard):
Stephen: Me go potty first!
Anthony: No - wait for me. We can play swords!
I didn't even know this game existed.
funny things
Anthony says SO many things that make us laugh. Here are some recent ones:
Last week, outside, we were seeing a lot of daddy long-legs on the porch. He found a much smaller black spider and said, "Look! It's a mommy short-legs."
Last weekend, on meeting our friend, Anand's, girlfriend, who told him that her dad's name is Anthony: "Is he four, too?"
This morning at breakfast he complimented dad on breakfast: "This is the best breakfast I never ever had."
and you thought you had a bad day...
This has me laughing because it is the kind of family life incident that you would think could only happen in a movie.
funnies
This morning I offered to make the kids pancakes for breakfast. They all declined, but when we got downstairs and I asked if they would prefer oatmeal or eggs and toast, Teresa said, "I thought you were going to make pancakes." I reminded them that no one wanted pancakes when I asked earlier and Teresa retorted, "Oh, we must have thought you said, 'Do you want mushroom salad?'"
Stephen has a fever, so I'll be staying home from the wedding tomorrow with him. Tucking the girls into bed, I noticed that they already had their fancy dresses picked out and, reflecting on how today went, I told them that they could only go to the wedding tomorrow evening if they behaved well all day. Catherine replied, "Well, I'm grumpy in the morning when I wake up, so I'll just stay in bed until it's time to go to the wedding."
following the rules
Catherine came home last week with a new toothbrush, a little toothpaste sample, and instructions on how to brush her teeth. She has been very diligent about doing it just the way the pictures show (and making sure that her sister and brothers do it that way, too). She even jumps out of bed to make sure that she has time to brush them before school. I need to remember this when it is time to teach her something new. If there are "rules" to follow (and mommy didn't make them up) then she will follow them with zeal! She has even brought me the dental floss and told me, "Mom, you're supposed to help me fleece my teeth."
funny kids
I made a veggie platter last week and Anthony was thrilled that I opened a can of "finger grapes" to go along with the cauliflower, broccoli, and carrot sticks.
Teresa awarded Adam the "best dad of the year" award with his recent purchase of a (LED) lighted Bethlehem star for the top of our Christmas tree.
I was talking on the phone with Adam about our supper plans tonight, and when I got off the phone Teresa asked, "Did dad shoot an Indian?" (I'm cooking some more rice to eat with our leftover Indian food). I'm still laughing about that one...
too funny
My last post is of a more serious nature, so I felt like I had to put up something a little bit more light-hearted. THIS IS THE FUNNIEST THING I'VE READ IN A LONG TIME. Go Saints!
April 20, 2008
after dinner conversation
Teresa: Mom. The other day Catherine had a cup in her room with water in it.
Mom: I know, Teresa. Mom took it away.
Teresa: Mom. We aren't supposed to have water in our room.
Mom: That's right, Teresa. But, Catherine was feeling ill the other night and I brought her some water to drink. I left it on her windowsill and we forgot about it.
Teresa: (holding a cup of water) Mom. I feel ill.
Anthony: I feel A.
Here's an unrelated, but cute picture I found of Anthony with a Cheerio stuck in the middle of his forehead.
must be a guy thing...
As I was preparing dinner, Stephen sat at my feet repeatedly bonking his head on the side of the refrigerator. As Anthony walked into the kitchen, he observed his baby brother doing this, laughed, then proceeded to pull him away from the refrigerator saying, "My turn."
toilet humor
Danielle Bean recommended that moms start a blog as an anger management tool. When you can look at a situation that might make you lose it and see it instead as something that would be funny to write about, it helps you keep your cool. Quite honestly, this is what got me thinking seriously about starting a blog. So, tonight, when Adam snaked Catherine's pocket-sized hairbrush and Anthony's bouncy ball out of the toilet, we were able to laugh about it. We know who the culprit is because mom has caught him trying to flush several smaller items, Teresa's socks, and Stephen's lullaby gloworm...now how to get him to stop!
