opening weekend

My husband has been getting text messages from his friends and relatives as they bag their deer. He had decided that he wouldn't go this year because it is getting closer and closer to my due date and there are a few projects he wanted to finish before the baby arrived (and his brother promised him some of the meat from any deer he shot). Today, he is working on two rooms in the basement. The smaller one has been cleaned out and will have our deep freezer and a wall of shelving to store canning supplies and food that we put up from our garden. The other is much larger and will be a place for "clean storage" - primarily for wine and beer-making supplies, including his beer fridge, along with other things.

I've been thinking of the book, We're Going On A Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury that we recently returned to the library. My kids have this book memorized with one exception. At the end, instead of running upstairs and hiding under the covers, the boys say, "Quick, daddy, get the gun! Daddy gets the gun and shoots the bear. Bang!" Daddy is so proud. :)
