assessing the damage

The problem was not that we had a late frost; we are usually in danger of frost until Mother's Day and do not plant our summer garden until then. The problem this year was that it got so warm so early. While that was great for chasing away the winter blues and getting spring-feverish kids back outside, it was not great for the landscape. It is getting warm again and time to start assessing the damage. This morning my daughters came running to me with hands full of dandelions and the joy that the Foss family had upon discovering that the bluebells were in bloom.



Looking good:
late tulips (purple)
grape hyacinth
rhubarb
flowering crab (pink)
my favorite fragrant purple phlox
serviceberry (Amelanchier)
hostas and other perennials that bloom in summer like irises, peonies, hollyhocks, lily-of-the-valley, tiger lilies, etc.

Hopeful:
lilacs
roses
redbud trees
flowering crab - white (flower buds look good, but leaves look terrible)
apricot tree (flower buds froze, but leaves look good)
hybrid lilies
most of our ferns

Pretty sad:
early tulips and daffodils
daylilies
newly transplanted raspberries
willow trees
