The chicken coop is going up slowly, as you can see in the background, behind our apricot tree that is beginning to bloom. It has been very rainy and windy (and we've even had some snow) so construction has been delayed. Today is a beautiful day, though, and a friend has come to help.
Our seedlings have really taken off under the grow lights in our basement. The flat that still has a lid on it are our bell peppers, which took longer to germinate than the tomatoes and eggplant. The flat on the bottom right is our broccoli, which germinated the fastest of all. We have one more to plant with our melon and cucumber vines...perhaps today.
Also in the basement, are our ducklings in their new brooder...a kiddie pool. They seem like they've doubled in size, but still have a lot of growing to do before they go outside...like our new Buffs.
These ducks came from a neighbor who wanted to buy just a few to add to their flock, but the guy who was selling them wanted to sell them all. So, they gave us the "extras": four hens and two drakes. They are supposed to be Buff Orpingtons. The hens on the left are beautiful, the one in the middle is darker all over and one on the right is different as well, with an orange beak and darker coloration. One of the drakes is mostly Buff, but they both have white rings on their necks and one has a rusty chest, which is typical of Mallards, so they're definitely not a pure breed. They are in the (more secure) kennel until the coop is done and the duck house is free for...ducks.
(Updated to add that one of these hens laid her first egg for us sometime Sunday night; an "Easter egg"! Our 6yo doesn't want us to eat it, "There is a baby duckling inside!")
